张德建：

绘画艺术是一个整一体。古今中外的绘画，历史悠久，传统优秀，虽然方向各异，思想内容和风格面貌多样，甚至对立，但绘画整体具有这种包容性。绘画依旧是绘画，是我们今天从事绘画实践取之不尽的源泉。我比较欣赏西方现代主义绘画的艺术主张，特别是贝尔的艺术论，至今坚信他的艺术论中的合理内核。我也很欣赏中国绘画的大写意，喜欢中国画论中大师们的经验之谈，希望能有所继承。

我现在的绘画实践与西方现代主义抽象绘画有相合之处，但我的绘画是综合的，什么喜欢就结合什么，没有抽象绘画那么纯粹。我喜欢观察自然，触景生情，更像“外师造化，中得心源”的中国绘画的创作状态。我的习画方式是“师古人，师造化，师心。”

Art of painting has its integrality

Zhang Dejian: 

Art of painting has its integrality. Looking back through global art histories, there are various paintings pointing out different directions and styles, some of which are even opposite to each other. However, the integrality of painting remains its inclusivity, and become an endless root for today’s art practices.

I personally admire the conceptions of western modern art, especially Clive Bell’s art theories, in which I still believe. At the same time, I also appreciate the concept of freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting theories. The old Chinese painting masters give us excellent examples about art according to their experiences, which I hope could well inherit.

There are some similarities between my individual art practices and western modern abstract paintings. But my abstraction is not that pure, and is comprehensive. It’s more like a random combination of different interesting factors. I like to observe nature, and get the feelings from it. This kind of experience is very close to traditional Chinese painting method, which is “learning from ancients, from nature, and from feelings”.
